Poetic Portions: Poems and Recipes from Canadian Writers                                       Literary Editor: Cynthia Sharp

A unique anthology of poetry and recipes gathered from Canadians across cultural backgrounds and literary styles to offer healing in words and meals – a celebration of the gifts of the Earth shared in community.

Through the healing power of words, 24 new, emerging and established poets reflect on issues related to food, such as homelessness, faith, thanksgiving for life and the relationship of one’s homeland with culture and identity.

The collection features Prince Edward Island poet laureate David Helwig and members of the League of Canadian Poets, including Tara Wohlberg, Fern G. Z. Carr, Honey Novick and psychiatrist and poet Dr. Ron Charach, along with rob mclennan of above ground press, a key personality in the Canadian publishing scene.

Writers like Bonnie Nish, founder and Executive Director of Pandora’s Collective Outreach Society in Vancouver and Executive Producer of the Summer Dreams Literary Arts Festival, who is doing her PhD. in healing arts, gently weave many threads of thought on food and the nourishment of humans and the Earth into their poetry.

Anthony Bansfield, the nth digri, producer of WordLife poetry and music compilation and co-founder of  the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word, the first national slam poetry tournament in Canada, brings a spicy poem and dish to the table.

There is a contribution from Dr. Carl Leggo, who has been instrumental in changing the way poetry is perceived and taught, not only in his book Teaching to Wonder: Responding to Poetry in the Secondary Classroom, but also by example in his everyday manner of respectful interactions with students, advocating a balance of reader response theory with filling in the gaps in students’ knowledge, always encouraging and believing that everyone who wishes to can write a poem.

There are also contributions from upcoming poets whom members of the league have recommended, so that we may bring readers the talent and voices on the cusp of national recognition.

From prose poetry to traditional rhymes, Canadian writers offer reflection on our deep and meaningful connections with nature, the rhythms of the Earth, and the process and energy of growing food and preparing meals. Prepare to relax into the healing rhythms of verse and nutrition!

Part of the proceeds from this publication will go towards the Pandora’s Collective Scholarship Fund:
